About the role
This is a full-time, in-person role based in Los Altos, California. This position requires working on site.
We are looking for an exceptional AI Research Engineer to join our core team as a Founding Member. We are building frontier Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI) systems that enable AI agents to continuously learn and improve in real, complex environments, and apply those capabilities to enterprise-scale problems.
You will have access to the essential resources for frontier AI research: large-scale GPU compute, real enterprise environments, and high-value proprietary data and complex tasks from leading companies around the world.
This role spans frontier research, engineering, and real-world problem solving. Beyond deep technical expertise, you will work directly with customers and design partners, quickly understand complex problems in unfamiliar domains, translate them into well-defined technical problems, and lead the team from problem definition through to results.
What you’ll do
- Build frontier Recursive Self-Improvement systems that enable AI agents to continuously improve on complex, real-world tasks.
- Advance agent learning, long-horizon reasoning, reinforcement learning, and LLM post-training.
- Build advanced agent systems spanning reasoning, tool use, memory, context management, and complex task execution.
- Use large-scale GPU compute for training and experimentation, rapidly testing new technical approaches.
- Work directly with technical teams and business leaders at leading global enterprises to understand their most important and complex problems.
- Quickly navigate unfamiliar domains and identify the underlying technical bottlenecks in incomplete or ambiguous requirements.
- Translate real enterprise challenges into clearly defined AI problems, evaluation criteria, and technical approaches.
- Apply frontier AI advances in real enterprise environments and iterate rapidly based on real-world feedback.
- Define and drive critical technical projects from zero to one, taking end-to-end ownership of direction and outcomes.
- Work with the founding team to shape the company’s core technical direction and long-term roadmap.
- Help recruit and mentor the research and engineering team as the company grows.
What we’re looking for
- A PhD in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, or a related field, or an equivalent research or engineering track record.
- Experience making significant technical contributions at a frontier AI lab, a leading AI startup, or a core AI team at a major technology company.
- Deep technical expertise in at least one of reinforcement learning, LLM post-training, agent systems, long-horizon reasoning, evaluation, or training systems.
- Strong customer-facing technical ability: you can quickly understand customer problems, communicate effectively with senior technical and business stakeholders, and turn ambiguous real-world challenges into actionable technical problems.
- The ability to quickly learn an unfamiliar industry, workflow, or technical domain.
- Independent judgment about which problems truly matter, beyond executing an existing roadmap.
- The ability to drive work from problem definition through experimentation, training, and real-world deployment.
- Strong engineering execution, technical judgment, and ownership.
Nice to have
- Experience in a core technical role at a frontier AI lab or a fast-growing AI startup.
- Experience with large-scale reinforcement learning, post-training, or distributed training.
- Experience with long-horizon agents, coding agents, or complex tool-use systems.
- Experience working directly with enterprise customers or design partners to solve complex technical problems.
- High-quality publications, significant open-source projects, or technical contributions adopted in real products.
- Experience at an early-stage startup or on a founding team.
